Hey welcome to the forum Mr Custard...
I had the alternator go on my A610, and had a local guy rebuild it, and it was like new... very quick service and I thought a good price...
I know the GTA alternator is a little different, but I know this guy can sort you...

Mr Carl Wise... Electrostart in Daventry... 01327 876666 or 07702 662373.

He does Mail delivery too just call him, he is often there even on a sunday...

Hope this helps

Vince..

Stuart, IMO the chances are that it is the regulator. If you feel like having a go at repairing the altenator, this is the regulator you require.

There are reasonably inexpensive from Renault. Around £90-£100 last time I bought one.

Are the bearings OK, I have not known an altenator to whine due to an electrical failure, but bearings, yes. That would cause the unit to get hot also.
Just a thought.

I had a unit seize completely, but it was making a bit more than a whine when it did so.

We'll the guys at the shop have found a modern 110amp with internal fans it's slightly smaller looks neat and it fits for £100. Think I will go of it unless someone can see a problem with changing make.
