Fuel Gauge Working!

Can't believe it won't believe it but it appears that my fuel gauge has finally come back to life.

However before I do anything stupid like trust it can anyone tell me what it's should say when the tank is absolutely brim full?

Just over 15 gals..... somewhere between 15.2 & 15.6 .... at least thats what mine reads. :up

Mmmm well highest I've seen is 11.4. I'm worried that I've inserted the tube at the wrong angle and depth- any tips?

Jon.... is yours the earlier type with a spiral wire down the tube, or the later type with the TSU and two parallel wires down the tube ?

PS. This is the later type:-
You can just see the two parallel wires passing through the float above and below the center float guide. (picture cropped.. sorry :down )

Mine has no black box. I haven't had the sender apart to look at type...

Have you still got the boot liner out ? ..... if so it might be worth checking the resistance across the two connectors on top of the gauge with the two wires disconnected.
BTW.... did it suddenly suddenly start working by itself, or have you been working on the gauge circuit ... Also is the reading going down as fuel is used ?

Yes it is. It works fine but is inaccurate. I'll try putting it in at a better angle.

I registers fuel being put in but not enough so I guess I need to reposition.

Jon when you re locate it there is a recess in the base of the tank that the sender sits in

Jon.... according to the parts book, the bottom of the sensor sits on a conical spring which.... I hope.... is clipped into the bottom of the tank in the recess mentioned by turbodog. See pic below.
Once you have done that, do a full computer reset and see if the gauge is more accurate.
Firstly though...If you have a meter, it would be prudent to check the sensors's resistance when the tank is full with the sensor out of the tank. The way to do that is to clip the meter probes to the sensors spade connectors, turn the sensor upside down... this will move the float to the full position... and your meter reading should be 350 ohms +/- 50.

The spring is a push fit into the end of the sender tube but often comes out and you have to fish it out the tank .I don't think you can be much out with the sender position/angle ,it only really wants to sit one way .The spring damps the tube more than set height and top end you would see if it was too far out .

Thanks for that info Lee.... I have never removed the tube myself, so rather made the assumption.
But I agree with you that for the fuel reading to be that far out, (11.4 gals) the tube would be sticking well out of the tank. Thats why it is important to make sure the restive reading with the float right at the top of the tube is within the range quoted in the manual, If that is correct, I would hope the fuel gauge reading would be right, after a full computer reset.
If however the resistive reading is not within tolerance..... well, lets hope it is. ;)
