NEW REAR LIGHT COVERS GTA

Postby stephendell » Thu Jul 18, 2013 1:13 pm

Exact replicas of the smooth GTA type rear lamp covers.

These are being organised by Wayne from the M100 forum.

They are trying to keep the lenses at 100 euro / set. plus delivery.

This will likely be a one off run so if you are interested please contact wayne directly at [email protected]

I would like to thank everyone that has currently expresses an interest in these covers. And would also like to thank Stephan for all of his hard work sorting out my club membership.

It seems that many people have tried and failed to get these parts made at an affordable price over the last few years.

I believe that we have now managed to sort this out ( few minor details still to work on but we have the main costs confirmed).

For anyone that would like to see the discussions that have been going on about them with various clubs please see the following links.

French Alpine forum: http://alpinerenault.free.fr/outils/for ... 9218777f2b

Lotus Forum: http://forum.lotuselancentral.com/viewt ... 85&t=21600

I will be having an injection mould made for these parts and there will be a 1 off run of the parts. There will be additional sets made but in a limited quantity.
They will be made from polycarbonite plastic which is UV resistant and I believe is the same as the origional parts? They will be sold on a first come first served basis.

I have been holding off starting production as I was waiting for an earlier part to be finished and shipped to me from this company so as I could reclaim some funds to put into the light cover project.I am just an enthusiast and not a business so I do not have alot of money to spend on projects like this.
See here: http://forum.lotuselancentral.com/viewt ... 30&t=21650

Also the original part that I shipped was damaged in transit. A friend has now offered his brand new light assy cover to be used for the 3D scan for the mould and colour comparison. Be aware that this colour may differ from the lights on your car as it is direct from the factory store room and has not sat in the sun for 20 years.

Mine are serverely sunburnt as they have been in the Middle East for 20 years. So were never really good for a colour match.

As the mould is quite large. I have been quoted 50 days for mould production plus the time it takes the parts to be scanned, produced and shipped to me. Realistically and looking at other smaller projects I think this may take upto 4 months. Due to the size of the parts they will have to come by sea freight so it may take even longer.

Sorry there is nothing I can do about production times. I am happy to wait to recieve a high quality part. This company has made several other parts for me in the past and have done a very good job at an afordable cost. Due to the cost of the project. They have promised to keep production times to a minimum for this part.

I hope to have the new part shipped to the manufacturer in the next week or 2. and will keep everyone informed on the progress of the covers.

Open to any advice, questions or critisism on the project. I would like to deliver the best part possible for an acceptable cost.

Kindest Regards

Wayne

Hi Paul. (and everyone else).

Sorry for the delay in getting this project off the ground.

To be honest. My limited finances have been pre occupied with some other projects. Which are hopefully now sorted.

I was in touch with the company a couple of weeks ago to confirm that they will still offer the price that they confirmed several months ago.
My friend still has the NEW cover packed and ready to send.

I still have a lot of unanswered questions on the import side but I hope to get the sample off very soon. I know that there are a lot of people waiting on an answer.

I know I can get them made for an acceptable cost. it's just the import and distribution side of things that I am worried about.

Please understand. Production cost is only about 50% of the cost of me getting the parts in my hand. These parts are a lot larger than my usual reproductions.... We are now looking at sea freight.....

I hope to have the new samples sent out in the next few weeks. and can maybe offer an update in the next month when 3D scans have been made.

So sorry for delays. I am having to put up a lot of money to get this started and I am trying to keep cost at a minimum for everyone...... Injection moulds are expensive!!

Hope everyone will bear with me...

Regards

Wayne

BTW....

If anyone can offer me any advice. Please let me know...... I'm just a Lotus enthusiast trying to help people. I'm not a business man trying to make money.

Hi

I already have a manufacturer in Taiwan that I work with that is good at doing exactly this kind of work. I also have an importer and customs setup.

Pm me your number and let's see what we can do to help....

Cheers

Andy, I know you meant it it jest but you are spot on,Taiwan is a high quality place. They make nearly all the worlds optical drives(CD,DVD,blu ray...the difficult bits anyway) , a significant amount of the hard drives, controls nearly all the world electronics manufacture (Foxconn is Taiwanese run) and make close to all the worlds push bikes and components, regardless of what it says on the sticker.
A mate of mine has all his specialist bike parts made out there and the quality is superb.

Well the offers there.

So far in over 11000 units I've had nothing but amazing and consistent quality.

It would be good for all members of the club to be able to get these done and our cars in the best shape possible.

The lens covers are a totally different animal Jon .
I could mould your mutes in the garage on a tiny manual machine with a two piece tool all day long and get consistant results
The lens covers will require so much more in every aspect .They are a very large cosmetic item in clear polycarbonate ....It will require very careful moulding on a very large press ,750tonne clamping pressure .Part feed position and flow length paths are crucial along with mould temps etc etc etc ....Polycarb is a very tough material to mould correctly and cosmetic items are a particular headache .
I know from experience just how awkward an item this will be to produce ...the tooling is only the start of the issues I'm afraid .

Not wanting to "wee wee" on any bonfires but I've been in the industry for 25 years ....I have another option but have held off pressing the button on it for a while as others always seem to be 'about' to get stuff done but it never happens .That's not a dig ,just reality ,these things are always more involved than it first seems and getting people to stump up any development deposits is nigh on impossible .

Tooling ...we used to budget on 25% extra correction costs on any far east tooling when it landed in the UK .Mouldings ...you can get a crate of shite quite easily .OK on a 2p item ...not so on one that will cost £100
