New to this Alpine thing, but I like it

Postby sparkey » Thu May 22, 2014 6:55 pm

Hi all,

Bought my first Alpine a few weeks ago:

Generally been into Lotuses before but I thought this would be a bit different, and it is. Seems to be in generally good condition with a few electrical issues as they all seem to have from reading various threads on this forum. Most annoying is the speedo which rarely shows any sign of life.., howver mechanically it seems really good and goes very well.

Welcome!!

You'll enjoy the ride I'm sure.

On the subject of your speedo- a good long stint of use may well bring it back to life...

About your speedo... I would recommend reading this post...

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4664&hilit=speedo

It maybe long but I think it covered just about all you will need. I for one would recommend replacing the transistor. I also removed that dam ugly huge plug inside the dash, by soldering it inline, but that was just my choice. My speedo works fine. never let me down since. just ask if you ned to know more.

Thanks for the welcome guys. So far on the Speedo issue I've checked all connections from the sender to the speedo which hasn't helped. I have a spare speedo head that came with the car, but the previous owner apparently tried it and it made no difference..
I didn't move at all for the first week or so, but last weekend it suddenly jumped into life, but was jumping between actual speed and abou140mph. That lasted about 30 seconds and then it died again, but it got me very excited for a short time !!

So there must be life in it and it would suggest a back connection somewhere maybe.

I'll look into becoming a member later and go through that post Vince..

Cheers

Steve

Welcome Steve.

Check your earths! It's a catchphrase round these parts.

Check in particular the main earth strap from the battery to chassis as that lives in a gulley and can corrode badly. If it's a bad connection it can cause speedo issues. Even if it's not that, it's no bad thing to check and clean anyway as it will help with starting. Even if yours starts well now, it's good to make sure so you aren't caught out. Also check the battery condition. Again if it's old it might be worth renewing.
I'm just here for the gasoline.
