Thought I'd join in too! Had my GTA for 7 days now and I'm thrilled to pieces! So far I've span the car on a country lane in Devon (not something I'm proud of as I consider myself to be a good driver) and also broke down on the A3 returning from Goodwood festival of speed on sunday, not ideal as I was taking a young lady out on a first date! We thought we'd kill some time whilst waiting for the RAC by 'getting to know each other better' lets just say when the RAC man knocked on the window! Very embarrassing but still very funny!

It turned out that the computer lied saying there was 5.5 gallons of fuel left when actually there was no fuel in what so ever! Could be worse I suppose, just another friendly querky feature I need to get used to on my GTA!

So here goes....

My real name is Ste, Im single and live in Bolton, which is near Manchester incase some of you dont know.

I've had my GTA Turbo since I was about 20, and im 27 now, so quite a long time.
My car is red with Azev Type C wheels, 18's on the back, 17's on the front.
Bodywork is mint, so is the interior, which I re-trimmed myself.

Mods so far are: De badged, apart from Alpine Badge on the Nose Cone, Bleed Valve fitted, Forge Motorsport Dump Valve, Pipercross Foam Filter, A610 steering wheel fitted and leather seats dyed black.

Used daily, so far so good :-)

introductions

Postby clivebawden » Fri Jul 02, 2004 9:20 pm

Hi, I'm Clive
I've just bought a red 1988 GTA (non-turbo).
Being middle-aged (in my forties) I remember seeing the GTA when it first came out at the Earls Court Motor Show - when would that have been? Mid 80's I suppose. I promised myself I'd have one one day, and here we are about 20 years later!
I bought it to replace an ageing Porsche 944 whose body was showing signs of rust - not a problem on the GTA of course! The other reason I convinced myself it was a good idea was that there appears to be significantly more room in the back than on a 944 and I have 2 kids. I haven't taken them out in it yet (I'm divorced and don't see them every week), can anyone tell me if a tall 12 year old will fit in the back?
The other thing I need to find out urgently is where I can get it serviced in the Cheltenham area. I'd prefer a specialist who doesn't charge main dealer rates.
I've heard you can run this engine on unleaded if you alter the timing - anyone got any experience of this?
By the way, I bought my car on ebay. If anyone's looking for one there are a surprising number of GTA's being auctioned.
Signing off for now.

unleaded

Postby David Gentleman » Fri Jul 02, 2004 11:35 pm

The atmo GTA runs 15 degrees of advance as standard as is designed to run on Super/4 Star. If you retard it by 4 degrees that will sort it out for normal unleaded. Saying that I used to run mine with 22 degrees of advance on normal unleaded at it gained 10bhp and alot more midrange grunt..though the manifolds did start to glow a bit!.

My turn

Postby Lee » Tue Jul 06, 2004 10:35 pm

N'other Lee, from Chester, here. Just bought the yellow turbo that you've all been chatting about off ebay. See post in buying and selling. Have atmo almost exactly the same colour since 96. Bought it with slight front end damage. Replaced front end including subframe cover from bulkhead forwards. Its got Alpinaut Fagix 15 x 10s with 285s on the back 15 x 7 with 205s on the front and custom made Leda adjustable shocks and uprated springs on adjustable platforms. All this going on the Turbo. Have leather in rafters of garage which may go in too but quite like the velour. Anyway the boring bit. I'm 43 (stuff that middle aged business Clive!) married 1 x 31/2 yr old daughter and one on the way plus an extension being built so a busy man! Previously had the whole gamut of Minis including 66 rally prep Cooper S 1330 45 Weber sccr box etc etc. Then Alfas, sud then GTVs (lovely cars) then built a Westfield x flow 1700 etc then the GTA, plus 10s and 10s in between. Have a penchant for Reno 4s!! Saw the rally prep 5 Gordini on ebay at same time as my Turbo and fancied putting it all into a 4. Bit strange you see! Run a Merc 300E 24v to work and back. Quite fast for a big car. But gotta sell now. Oh yes, a 125cc Kart hidden in my sister's garage. Wife doesn't have to know everything does she. She wouldn't have known about the turbo either as would have swapped it on the drive for the atmo and hidden that but the seller left message on answer machine asking when I was picking it up! Will post pictures soon. No not of the wife! Anyway Blues Brothers on so gotta go. Oh yeah last thing. Mr D doing great job with all this. Big thankyou.
GTA atmo owner.

update

Postby clivebawden » Wed Jul 07, 2004 4:26 pm

Clive here again.
Just to say that I've answered my own question about where to get my GTA serviced in the Cheltenham area. Elsewhere on this excellent website I found mention of Roadspeed at Stroud - about 20 minutes from where I live. I've spoken to them and it appears they are Alpine specialists - problem solved!
And apologies to Lee; forty-something GTA owners are definitely not middle-aged!

Hi there, Mark from Nottingham here. been looking at the web site for some time, but only just joined the forum.

I've had a 1992 atmo GTA for 9 1/2 years. Metallic Red. Had 60k on the clock when I bought it at 2 1/2 years old, now just under 123k.

Mostly standard, apart from custom scorpion stainless silencer, magnacor leads, and "green" air filter.

0-60 in about 7 secs, has done 140mph (I chickened out before the car did).

Had a new clutch a few years ago, and an engine rebuild ("if it wears, change it") in 2000.

Used for everyday motoring most of it's life, but a change of my work location has piled on the mileage a little more than average in the last 2 years.

Since a couldn't find anything to compare to it (price v. performance etc), bought a ford focus estate earlier this year as a "sensible" car. GTA not used much in the last 6 months.

Serviced for about the past five years by Prima Racing - Neil is a little on the expensive side (at least for this area), but is very helpful and efficient.

Unfortunately the problems in getting some parts now means it's effectively changed from being a reliable everyday motor into a hobby only car. Since motor mechnaics isn't my main hobby (I have too many others!) I'm seriously thinking about selling it in the near future (to a good home, of course).

M.

Introduce yourselves

Postby steviemac » Fri Jul 16, 2004 1:04 pm

Greetings everyone in Alpineworld,
I`m Steve and, like Peterg, from West Cumbria. Looks like this area has the most GTA`s per capita head in the country. As well as Peterg there is another owner I only found out about through C.A.R. (Club Alpine Renault) who lives only 3 miles away from myself. Must be the nuclear fallout from the infamous Sellafield that plays havoc with the part of the brain that fills you full of optimism. Like buying a GTA under the impression that it will be totally reliable and never requiring any attention whatsoever. I wish! I`m in my late 40`s been involved in cars and bikes since I was a teenager.Had a few oddballs like the Nova and the Avante kit cars I built. As well as those I`ve endured a Matra Bagheera, Jaguar XJ V12 and a Rover 3500S which contributed its engine to my first dabble in chassis design for one of the first Lamborghini Countach replica bodyshells (moulds taken off a hired Lambo - but thats another story) to be mounted onto. Then I designed and built another mid engined 2 seater with a V12 Jaguar motor, running gear and original bodywork which finished up on the `Which Kit` magazine stand at the Stoneleigh Kit Car show. Now I`m happy tinkering with my bike (Ducati 851 SP3) and sorting out my GTA Turbo that`s had all the usual mods to it, requires a few electrical problems sorted (don`t they all?) and a general tidy up to the interior.
I`ve used my GTA daily since buying from a guy in Hereford last September and so far it`s never let me down. It rattles and squeeks a bit but thats probably down to age, lowered and uprated springs and the interior panels not been refitted correctly. Other than that I love it!

Introdude Yourselves

Postby KEVIN » Sun Aug 08, 2004 11:44 am

hi everyone,my name is kevin im 36 and am a service manager/engineer for a fire alarm company.i have always been interested in cars from the start with my 1600cc supermirria 131fiat,dolly 1850(couldnt afford the sprint),mk11 escort with pinto added of course,2.8i capri, manta 2.0 gte and a few unmentionables here and there but none come even close to the performance, style and street cred of my pearl white GTA Turbo.I brought the car from a mate in 1998 and drove it daily for about a year or so in and out of london then i worked in another industry and was away a lot and i garaged the car untill this year.as you can imagine i have had to replace a few parts and now i need some new or replacement injectors.i had all the injectors refurbished but some of them are still not firing.the price renault quoted me was 155.00 pounds each(ouch)and i need 2 possibly 3 of them,if anyone knows any better please let me know.apart from that it should be road worthy and i hope to be able to go to some of the meets before the good weather dissappears for another year and of course have loads of fun while trying to retain your license.
cheers kevin.
