GTA Turbo running, but way too rich

Postby Irish GTA » Wed Aug 19, 2015 10:31 pm

I finally got my GTA Turbo running and actully drove it after several years. It runs way too rich, pops, bangs and smokes. The fuel pressure regulator is new, as is the coolant temp sensor.
I also see a vacuum tube from the front end of the engine just ahead of the throttle body inlet, leading nowhere. Where should it go?

Any ideas would be welcome. Nigel

Come on Nigel, first post and it's all woe.

Tell us about the good times. What year/colour is it? Pictures!!!

P.S For fueling I do know that the CO Potentioner to the right of the engine bay next to the coil pack can be adjusted for emissions so might be worth a look.

Thanks for the info on vacuum pipes. I shall check these today. The CO potentioneter has minimal effect - it goes from rich to richer!
As for woes, that has been part of the ownership experience unfortunately. However the car is very pretty, in generally good condition apart from a couple of small paint scrapes. It is metallic blue with BBS style split rim wheels. I am sticking with it.
I will post some pictures soon. Nigel

I checked the resistance of the coolant temperature and inlet sensors - they are both OK. The fuel pressure regulator is new and has been set to 3 bar using a gauge.
I suspect the injectors are gummed up from standing still for a long time. I will get these cleaned. Any recommended injector cleaners?
The vacuum pipes present one puzzle still. The horizontal exit pipes from the front end of the air intake are correct. There are 2 vertical exit pipes ahead of that - one to the absolute air pressure sensor on RH engine bay. The other? It was sucking air, so I blanked it, not knowing what it was for. Any answers, please?
It's a 1987 car, so no catalyst or other anti-pollution gear fitted.

How did you set the fuel pressure? Normal GTA regulator isn't adjustable so I'm assuming you have an adjustable one Nigel?

From memory I think standard pressure is 2.5 bar. Do a search or check with Lee but that might be your answer.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Now running normally ;) New vac lines to correct locations and pressure reg set .Think we still have a sticky injector so may be worth getting them cleaned but no longer acting like a diesel :up Various small issues but nothing major so far and car looks to be very rot free :up
Plugs were a tad fouled .....
