DRIPPING ENGINE

Is it common for the v6 to have poor oil gaskets? :(
To my horror both heads are seping and the timming chain cover as well as crank seal are all leaking.Its in a garage at the moment and ive been quoted around £700 to fix!
Good or bad?
Also been told while on ramps needs some welding doing on the front end!
Is this common on the GTA?

The oil slick on my garage floor and driveway is close to becoming an environmental disaster - so you are not alone in having oil leak problems. Mine too seems to come from the junction of the head and timing cover. £700 seems a bit steep as you can probably get the gaskets and seals to do the timing cover for under £100. But then again I am a tight Scotsman who hates even the thought of paying garage rates.

Driveshaft leaks are another classic on this motor that seem to be hard to stop completely although I have seen some threads on here saying that you have to seal up the roll pins in order to completely stop it.

Rust on cars that have been around for nearly 20 years is always going to be a problem I guess. I have a couple of nice perforated bits on the rear towers that will need seeing to before its next MOT

£700 to replace a few gaskets ,you'd be :x :x :x to pay that. Bear in mind its getting on for 20 years old so a few small leaks are not a worry .As for welding ,same ,I've just taken my front bumper off to upgrade the cooling and will probably need to fix a few rusty bits :lol: Most of the structural bits are sound methinks, but it all seems getatable .
I had my headgaskets done for £1200. If you take of the parts ,which included 6 hoses,2 headsets ,timimg guides ect ,total parts £460 .
Give this guy a ring , ( for a guestimate at least as he knows the car mention Lee) d,oes all my major work ,5 mins from M1/M69 junction

Its not a hard job to do if your mechanically minded. Remove the belts, pulleys, dizzy etc, and the front casing comes off quite easily(after about 30 bolts!). New gasket is around £30. Rocker cover gasket is about £20 each and cam and crank front seals are around £15 each. Nothing is really technical in doing this job, just messy and a bit time consuming.

Edit: oh, and take off exhaust silencer too..

Depends where it is, but I understand there are some hidden bits there that are best left to Alpine specialists.

Hi all
Thanks For info!!
Sadly garage have been on to me to say they cant do the welding on it as to close to the plastic!!
So i will remove from garage on saturday!
Its yellow with leather trim really looks nice ,known faults speedo ,a bit of welding and the oil leaks.mot jan 2006
Will i get £3000 for here ????????

You might do if you get rid of the yellow gear gator and put a nice new steering wheel on :wink:

The yellow gater has been removed and i do have a momo to fit m8!

Be sure that the timing case cover is leaking. My engine was caked in muck from many years of leakage, and after spending some 8 hours cleaning the engine, gearbox and underside of my car with a water blaster and degreaser, I found that the major part of my oil leakage was from the camshaft seal, and found that my distributor cap had about half a cup of oil inside. (yes it was still running OK)

I changed the seal, replaced the sump plug copper gasket and nipped up the sump gasket, and now my car does not leak a drop. I did replace the tappet cover gaskets as well when I adjusted the clearances that had never been done in 100 000 miles!!! Or maybe this is normal as the RH cover takes 45 mins to remove, and nobody is interested in that much pain.

The crank seal is relatively easy if you have tools undo the large pulley nut.

I have leaking driveshaft seals.....may even get round to sorting them in the winter....the oil gets pushed onto the bottom of the engine so to begin with I thought I had a leaky sump gasket.
