In view of the proximity of the a/c compressor to the exhaust has any one fitted or considered fitting a heat sheild?

It is not that close it is not a problem, but once the compressor is on you cannot get at anything, so make sure you have serviced and replaced everything before fitting it otherwise it's a re-gas.

You can drop the compressor off without a degas, I did to get access to the oil level sensor. BUT make sure you get the bolts back in the right place, I swapped two and when the car warmed up it shorted out the oil warning light, gave me a major heart attack. I couldn't find out what was happening but Paul Sage found my error.
Don't forget the liquid comes out hot anyway on its way to the condenser and its also the other side from the CAT which gets really hot. On a GTA there is heat shielding on the pipes . That's probably important for increasing the efficiency of the system.
