Electronic incident warning light flickering whilst driving

Postby pgoldsmith » Sat May 07, 2016 4:15 pm

This has happened before (around 2yrs ago) but today it was flickering on off on off for about 10 mins.
Didn't experience any loss of power, in fact it drove as per normal all the time it was flickering.

I'm thinking there is an intermittent connection somewhere, any suggestions on the likely suspects?
Thanks,
Paul

Something like the temp sensor will do it (one to the ECU, not the dash). ECU sees out of range and flashes the alert.

Thanks Darren, I presume the Temp sensor is the one screwed in near the Themostat housing?
By the way, failed to mention that when light is flickering the SERVICE light also flickers at the same time. Not sure if this confirms Temp sensor or something else.
I did attempt to remove the ECU connector, but after removing the small screw I couldn't suss out how it comes away.

No there are two sensors - on the left and right of the water pump looking down onto it. Unfortunately I can't remember which is which - ECU versus dash. Lee will no doubt be along before I've remembered / worked it out. (Just looked in the workshop manual and it's not much help) - Sorry.

You've lost me re the ECU connector. Where are you looking precisely?

Also check the dizzy and rotor. If that's poorly I think it can also cause a few flashes on the warning light I seem to remember.

The area between the rear seats. I thought perhaps the large ECU connector may be the cause (bad connection) but then if it was the engine wouldn't run that well.
Intended to disconnect, spray with switch cleaner and reconnect. But I cant see how the large connector is removed - do you need to unbolt from the rear bulkhead?

Dizzy and rotor are less than 3000 miles old - replaced a few years ago.

ECU removal is pretty easy - worth checking as the connectors can be bent. I had that and again that will cause a flicker.

Remove the studs / bolts holding the ECU to the panel. At that point it should come away and you can then remove the plastic gaiter from the main connector. Don't try to remove the connector without removing the gaiter as that holds in place two plastic things - a bit like thick combs with little teeth. These press into place and lock the connector in position so it can't come free by accident. Once you've got the gaiter off, and the 'combs' removed, then the connector can just be pulled out.

Watch how you re-seat it as you want to ensure you don't bend any connectors. Combs go in afterwards and gaiter fits over the top. I can't remember if there are any extra screws that secure the gaiter - I don't believe there are.

The actual connectors are press fitted into the main connector block and shared with Cosworth / Lancia ECUs. I have a few spare ones if you need any.

Update.
Think I may have found the problem.
John (in Jersey) mentioned 'bad connection' somewhere in the circuit. So decided to remove the warning lamp illumination assembly and clean up all the pins. Sprayed with switch cleaner and re-fitted.
Drove to and back from Prescott and the lamp didn't flicker once. :up

Thanks Darren for your advice on the ECU, I will remove the ECU and clean the connector pins anyway, as it probably hasn't been touched for 25 years.
