Engine Diagnostics

Is there any way of getting diagnostic information out of the engine management system, other than having a Renault XR25 diagnostic computer?

I came across this gadget for the Renault 21 turbo: http://www.renault21turbo.btinternet.co.uk/fastchip.htm and it got me wondering whether it would be possible to write some software for a PC to read information from the GTA diagnostic port to help spot things like dodgy sensors and intermittent faults.

I guess that in order to achieve this, I would either need some fairly detailed information about how the EMS works or access to a diagnostic machine so that I could monitor the data going between it and the EMS.

That's about as far as I've got. Any ideas/info out there?

I'm no expert on these things, but I too have wondered what to do if a diagnostic pod is required. The second last line from your linked page sort of tells the answer to your question, "Also soon to follow will be a guide to use the XRD as an XR25...".

Well perhaps 1 kind soul should get one of these and then allow other Alpineists to rent it when required. Maybe there is someone who has one of these XR25 machines and can advise if this Fastchip device is any better/different ???

I have just purchased a hand held diagnostic machine for the Alpines. This has an LCD display which will tell you any faults with the sensors and enable you rectify and clear them. Im currently waiting for a special lead for it. It is also able to tell all this too.

Inlet Temperature (Affects fueling and ignition)
Coolant temperature sensor (to ecu, not dash guage) If this is out it overfuels the car and reduces power
MAP sensor pressure (boost and vacuum, check for leaks or misreding sensor, or weak boost pressure)
TDC signal
Correct Engine Revolutions
Injector pulse width
Lambda voltage (for CAT equipped cars)
Air/Fuel ratio correction (to see if theres a fueling problem)
Knock sensor checking and step values (see if your car is pinking heavily)
Throttle position and calibration (useful for correct idling and tuning, dodgy throttle pot will lose power)
ECU sensor voltage (Check your getting the right voltages)
Idle speed control valve status
ECU version

The good thing about this unit is it is very compact, and it can be used on the move to enable live readings under load.

If anyone would like I can loan this unit out at a cost of £25 including delivery. This should cover the time and liability as it is a very expensive unit.

You need a Renault cable and a Rev v3 or v4 program module.
Available on eBay or I have two, won't help you at all simon as you need original ecu.
