should i take it to a Renault Dealer

Hi, Really getting lost with the prob now. ime thinking of taking it into a Renault Dealer for a diagnostic check :( wise or not :?: £65+vat per Hr
I think the Auto Electrician has done a runner.
Just out of interest, It OK to tow a GTA :?: :?: I only ask because with my dads TR7V8 your not supposed to tow without the engine running "Pump in g-box" or somthing:?:

Depends how much your local Renault dealer knows....remember GTAs are ancient history in dealer terms and most main dealers are only trained on more recent cars (after all who takes their car to a main dealer once its more than 3 or 4 years old). My local dealer in Workington flatly refused to take mine in, the one at Carlisle did and made a half decent job of changing a few bits and bobs but werent exactly experts! Have you looked around for somewhere locally to take it that might be cheaper and more interested in it? As for towing there shouldnt be any problem as long as you can get the tow rope hitched on so it doesnt cause any damage to your front bumper......the brakes will be shocking though....I free wheeled mine to the start area at Harewood on Saturday and nearly ran into the car in front when I braked.....I really had to stand on the pedal just to get it to stop without the servo assistance.

i was thinking with there diagnostics that they would be able to plug in and come up with the fault, they did say that its all on a computer now and should be able to plug in and find the fault :?: (Saying that they didnt know what a GTA was but are looking forward to seeing it)
How did you get on at Harewood? i was tempted to go, but what with the probs with the car i was a bit :x

Have you got AA home start type recovery or something to that effect, why not get them to look at it....you never know they may find out what's wrong with it, as it seems a bit hastey going to a Renault dealer unless you've got money to burn and the car will burn more of you hard earned in the future guarenteed :? ....... in that case get the car transported to one of the guys who you know can fix it..... eg ART or ARR..... and you know you'll be able to drive it home from there :lol:

it will cost me more to get it trailored down to art/arr and i need it on the road asap,ive had the car a few months now and in that time i have only driven it round the block a few times :shock: :x

I wouldn't advise towing without the engine running, purely for the reason PeterG mentioned - the brakes. Without the servo it'll be a pig to stop even from walking pace and it'd be a shame to crunch it.

The AA or RAC really are amazingly good at starting cars (its 90% of their work after all) and if you aren't a member then it might be worth joining for the time when you do require them. They will transport the car to a local garage if you have bought the top service levels too.

The Renault diagnostics (XR25 etc) will only get the info from the ECU and sensors so whilst it should help it won't necessarily give an exact answer and it then comes down to skill and experience.

Harewood went ok thanks....you should have come along..theres a bit of a report on the events section. You must have a few knowledgeable garages round your way who could take a look. A Renault garage is a big gamble especially as they dont appear to know what one is!! GTAs arent rocket science...in fact they are quite basic cars by modern standards....any garage with a mulitmeter and a bit of time will beable to see where the problem is. Join the AA......wait a week then get them in...if they fail then they can tow it to the garage of your choice!

You don't have to wait a week .I had a nasty old Mondeo diesel that went tits-up so left it in a field entrance and went home :evil: .A few days later (I still hadn't collected it ) the police were on the doorstep saying ,move it now Sir , so I joined the AA online and called them out that afternoon :lol: It works out cheaper in the end .
I would try the autoclub route first as they have no axe to grind and need to get you going ,thats all they do .At the very least they will transport your car to the chosen destination .

thanks for the help,but i might just tow it renault is only 5mins away and its already booked in might aswell give them a chance at fixing it i will update you on the situation tomoz :lol:

I hope the bill isnt too big.....be very careful towing it...the brakes are unbelievably bad without the servo assistance...crawl there at 10mph cause it'll take you 10metres to stop at 30mph.

Ill put one of those towing bars on, so ill trust the driver towing me to take it easy :!:
Fingers X it isnt to expensive :!: Just hoping there diagnostic machine will go straight to the prob and make up for there hourly rate :?:

are you also sure that there is not a hidden kill switch fitted that you do not know about? you could have accidently tripped it. :roll:
