Key fob died

Postby kevleaper » Thu Sep 01, 2016 6:25 am

Hi
I've just bought a rather tired looking GTA. I plan to restore it but first I want to get it running. It's not been run in years but the engine turns by hand. The ignition turns on with the key but no fuel pumps run and the starter doesn't engage. I'm assuming the immobiliser is on. I got two key fobs with the car but neither one works, even with new batteries. One of the key fobs has a Renault logo embossed in it and on the chip is a code. Can anyone tell me how to either get a working fob or ditch the immobiliser.
I think the immobiliser is a standard Renault one as there doesn't appear to be a lot of extra wiring but there are two leds on the dash cowl that might not be standard?

Thanks
ps the reg is F500 KAR just in case anyone recognises the car.

Cheers Kev

Hi Kev, Welcome to Alpine (pronounced Alpeen in some circles) ownership :up

Here is some interesting info on your Kar (see what I did there):

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1099

The standard fob purely works the central locking. No GTA had an immobiliser fitted as standard but it may have had an aftermarket one fitted.

There should be a relay for the fuel pumps (between the rear seats next to the ECU) which I think also runs the injectors so I would start there first.

I had a GTA once which also did the same as yours but it turned out the ECU was knackered. A guy called Martin Faulkes could be a very good acquaintance if this is the case. It could of course also be both fuel pumps being seized.

Glad it's being saved though that's very good news. We are all here to help so please join the club for all the benefits. Also whereabouts are you as ther maybe a member close by willing to help.

Thanks. I did have a look at the wiring between the rear seats, found the relay, bridged it out and both pumps primed. But the starter still didn't spin on the key so I figured it may be an immobilser and I'd just hot-wired the fuel side only. The two leds on the dash cowl don't look standard so maybe there's an after market one fitted - I'll try and follow where they go/do. Good to know the car shouldn't have an immobilser as standard - cheers
I've a copy of the workshop manual M.R 273 but it doesn't cover wiring.
I'm in Rutland which is pretty much in the middle of the country, near Corby but I don't usually admit that.
Cheers
Kev

I have an original wiring diagram available if you are interested?

Have you had a poke underneath at the chassis yet? How is it looking?

Yes the chassis. Hmmm. Not looking great from the little I can see at the moment. I plan to get the car to run and then get it on a ramp and scare myself. Your link with the pic of it sitting above the estuary was probably at low tide, I suspect the sea got a lot closer to it at high tide. I like a challenge though.
Yes I would like a wiring diagram please - how do I go about getting it?
Found an alarm system and I've started removing it - need to get the transmission tunnel cover off but ran out of time yesterday.

Cheers
Kev

Morning,

The immobiliser wiring in the GTA is very simple, down in the centre console drivers side, bunch of wiring, and amongst it is a white multiway connector with just the two yellow wires in it. Normally, the mating connector and wiring is simply a loop back. The immobiliser replaces the loop back. The wire / feed cut is the +12 switched to the ignition amplifier block in the engine bay. Open circuit kills the sparks... I'm not aware of it also killing the fuel pumps, as they are controlled via the ecu. But if aftermarket unit, it may be tied into other places...

Cheers,
Martin

PS... memory fade, may be a loop back or two inline ie ----[][]-----[][]---- white connectors 1 or 2 yellow wires only, link in placd when no immobiliser...

Cheers thanks for that. I'm hoping to get back on with the car this week. I did find an aftermarket immobiliser which I've started to remove. I've got a wiring diagram for a V6 R25 ECU, would you know if it's likely to be the same as a GTA?

Kev,

Yes it is the same... all the essential functions, there were minor differences in auxiliary signals such as the aircon input signal, automatic gearbox stuff, but nothing that affects running the engine, all pins are the same, just the "undedicated I/O" change function with the applicable car... but you can swap the ecu's around... GTA / R25 turbot

Car runs now (just) thanks. Turns out it had a immobilser and tracker spliced into it.
