Toyo proxes R888RR buyer beware

Postby stephendell » Thu Oct 13, 2016 12:51 am

Very suprised and disappointed (as I had set my wheel choice on this new tyre) to read the review of the replacement for the popular 888.

The current issue of Track Car and performance has a controlled tyre test of all the latest track day tyres including the new pattern 888.

Avon ZZR
Dunlop 3G
Nankang NS2R
Kumho V70
Yokohama A048

All compared to reference road tyre Continental Sport 5

Well the 888 was the worst by a country mile with lap times nearly 10 seconds slower than the continental.

What was best? The Yokohama A048 but still 3 seconds a lap slower than the continental.

Seems we might be wasting out money on these trackday special tyres.

what was the test car?
No numbers?
In my mind it is a bit circumstantial.

Sadly it's not if you read the full article.
Conti lap time was around 68s Toyo was 78s. Yokos 72/3 others in between. it was a very detailed and technical test by a serious magazine.

Best in mind this is the new pattern 888 they are testing. Might just be a turkey. It happens I guess.

can you post or email the whole article.
Also, I have heard good things about the Nagkans tyres ..... and very price performant too, but nothing over 225 17 and even less in 15 inch, wide.

Wasn't the test carried out on wet course so the Continental road tyre used as a Control tyre would have some advantage due to design.
Mind you, I have always used Yoko 48's on the 21 and with the Megane I've always fitted Conti's so I can really comment on the others on how they perform in dry conditions but the yoko's softs are a good all rounder until the tread depth goes.
