Gear selector bush installing

Postby Paul Tommo » Thu Jun 01, 2017 4:23 am

Hi All,
This has probably been asked here before however I was unable to find much on the subject.
I am currently installing new bushes on my gear selector at the gear stick. I managed to remove the old one and put the new one into the larger rod. Now that I have done that how do I get the gear stick side of the selector back into the new bush? i.e ball into socket.

Thanks for any info.

Brute force.
You have to brace and lever the bushed rod onto the ball. You need to place the lever behind the bush or it may well just pop out the rod .Washing up liquid on ya balls helps .

I find a pair of adjustable pliers works well, to get into a tight space and apply force.
something like this.

Thanks guys,
I'll give it another go tomorrow and try some lube on the ball and bush. Mmm, that doesn't sound right does it.

For the one at the back (gearbox end) that can be helpful, not the one at the stick end.

Adjustable pliers works well at both ends and it is easy to see what you are doing too.

Paul ...... as you appear to be doing this kind of work on your GTA, there is a mine of info for doing jobs like this, and more, in the members area. One especially that should interest you is named "Gear Shift Bush Replacement" dated April 9th 2013. Although it mainly refers to the gearbox end, the same principal applies to the gear lever end. At some stage you might consider becoming a full member to access the RAOC Members Area, as you could find it really useful. ;)

The bushes were locally sourced in Australia, however I think they are from Meccaparts.

On the up side I have got the ball end in. I was not able to do it with Multigrips or Adjustable pliers as you guys call them even with dish washing liquid. I also tried G clamp and a large adjustable clamp. So in the end I made a small clamp using some angle and 2 bolts and nuts which did the job. There should be a photo of my little clamp here if I upload it correctly.

I found that by heating up the plastic bush in very hot water, placing it over the knob first, and then pushing the outer ring section over next worked well. I struggled for a couple of hours before I tried this though.
