Me thinks he wasnt trying if your spider whipped his ass! Ive seen the recent article in sportscar and classic and even the spidercup cars aint all that (heavy and moderately powered as opposed to heavy and underpowered.....still look gorgeous though).

May be he couldn't drive then...... as we outdragged him down the straight and he couldn't pass us round the bends, but he was driving as agressively as everyone else on the circuit..... we couldn't do the V6 clio though only match him down the straight but easily nail him round the bends, you should have been there mate you would have loved it

Knew I'd get a reaction! :D I dont suppose a Europa cup GTA is any quicker round a circuit than a spider cup, but he should have been able to out drag you on a straight in it (but not on the corners). 300bhp of turbocharged V6 in full working order is gonna shift if its pointing the right way!

Unfortunately that GTA Europa was about 230bhp, according to Andrew Jones the guy has blown 2 engines up, so he's got a problem somewhere...

how heavy is it though??? the clio v6 has 300 Bhp also and I know it laps slower than a 200 horse spider cup  we've already proved it in the uk on an official renault track day last year, as the clio is around 1000 Kg and the spider is only around 750kg ....... power to weight has a lot to do with it! especially with that really heavy V6 in th back :? the europa cup must be around the tonne mark

also we've had the suspension tweeked on the Spider so it was handling superbly also a few new parts and some laser setup helps alot! 8)

Next time we go we'll nail him again as I'll put a more powerful lump in the spider

maybe I'll lighten the car a bit over the winter also as we can get some carbon body panels made and I Know if we try we can shave between 50 and 100kg off the car with a bit of the black stuff, we shaved 40 Kg off it by installing the carbon seats. :P

I'd be suprised if a clio was 1000kgs....the road version weighs nearly 1500kgs and there isnt that much kit to loose. The Europa GTAs were 1050kgs (compared to 1185kg of the road version).

there's your answer then  those heavyweight motors take a lot of horses to boot them around the track :?

clio v6 is so heavy because of the lump in the back! i'm not entirely sure but the last spec sheet I saw for a V6 trophy it was 1100 KG approx
but you could easily shave some off that, changing the seat, bonnet, tailgate, doors etc as Renault always use a heavy seat as standard equip, and the removable panels can always be copied in lighter materials or made thinner.

A carbon front clam was made for a Spider and it was 22 Kg lighter than the original one! I know I can save 50 Kg on my car by just lighnening 3 panels on it but it aint cheap in the Black stuff! :?

1050kgs being pushed by 300bhp is a better ratio than 750kg being pushed by 200bhp....and the V6 engined cars will have a hell of a lot more torque to boot...so theres more than power to weight ratio to it.
The Clio is a heavy old lump, and its a shame as its a really nice looking car.....Renault just dont seem to beable to do flyweight cars like they used to! The Clio V6 autocrossers I saw at Knockhill earlier in the year had most of their panels replaced with fibreglass and the owner still reckoned he was giving away a huge amount of weight to some of his opposition.

The early Clio V6 road cars were pretty poor really with only 230bhp in 1400Kg+ or around 165bhp per tonne.

The V6 Trophy came with 280/285bhp out of the box.

Most race cars ran just under 300bhp (298) and weighed typically 1150kg

So just under 260bhp per tonne.

Like Peter says quite disappointing when you consider that a 1985 Maxi 5 Turbo had 355bhp in a shade over 900kg and nearly 400bhp per tonne.

A 750kg spider with a true 200bhp would be 266bhp per tonne. So pretty evenly matched with the Clio apart from the torque and the drivers!
