Adapting brake discs to fit A610

Postby r5gordini » Sat Oct 07, 2017 12:27 pm

Hi All,

My rear discs need replacing. Whilst searching online, I was interested in seeing if something from another car could be adapted to fit as availability (at a reasonable price) of new discs seems scarce.

The nearest I could find are these, or similar:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-Grand ... SwcUBYEd7O

As far as I can tell, the dimensions are almost identical. The "correct" discs should be:

Diameter: 300mm
Thickness: 24mm
Hub diameter: 61mm
Height: 43.5mm
Number of wheel bolt holes: 5

The Scenic Mk2 discs are almost identical in every respect, except the height (seems to vary at around 44mm) and the PCD/number of bolts.

My proposal/suggestion would be that it should be possible to drill new holes to match the original A610 PCD and the research I have done suggests this is perfectly viable and safe.

Thoughts?

Even I wouldn't use re-drilled brake discs and I'm tight as two coats of paint.

Pairs usually turn up on ebay for £150 - 200. Or could yours not be skimmed?

Hehe... thanks guys... well, I do wonder... £250+ a set vs £30 for a set of Scenic ones, plus some machining....

I suppose you can't put a price on safety.

I just had a look at Simon Auto - it's fantastic that the site is now much better categorised. I used to find it so difficult to find anything when the GTA and 610 stuff was all together!

Oh - and skimmed? No... unfortunately not. I measured them yesterday - they are below the acceptable minimum at just over 20mm thick...

Avantime or Espace discs can be machined to fit I believe.

Most of the Ebay listed ones are either wrong or don't exist when you check.
You'll be OK re-drilling as long as there's not too much overlap to the existing holes.IE position so you can get a couple of clean holes.
Also check offset and internal diameter as they can clash with hub and carrier....been there ...done that...

You don't have to redrill the Espace/Avantime ones they are just a few mm too thick so they are skimmed down to the correct thickness.

Yeh but they have to lose about 4 mm and that takes them below bottom limit on the original car spec.
I do have a stack of used but good 610 discs. All about 24 to 23.5 thick but need a rub ....Also a pair of grooved same.

Phildini - yes you did... Oh well! I didn't realise they were near their limits and I couldn't afford them at the time.

Yes I saw that the Avantime discs would need machining down about 4mm.

As it happens, I may have found a source. I'm thinking of buying and stockpiling a few sets!
