GTA rear light cluster removal

Postby nationofzeros » Sun Dec 17, 2017 9:01 am

Dear Alpinistes

Any top tips for grief-free removal & refitting of the GTA rear light cluster units, please ?

I am working on the assumption that they may have been undisturbed since new... no doubt there will be a few stages which require a degree of caution & care !

Many thanks

Chris

Done a few of these ahem...

With age the plastic goes brittle which then lets the bolts come away.

In a nutshell you need a bit of luck. Take your time and try tightening the retaining nuts first then undo.

There isn't any way of soaking the nuts either. You could try squirting some WD40 or similar up the nut as it's got a hole running all the way up it.

Very hard to remove without damaging unfortunately.

They are secured by 4 x long hex nuts of the type you would find on the back of an old skool radio cassette.

The nuts will likely have seized onto the threaded section which screws directly into the plastic of the lamp.

The nuts will either:

1. Undo. Result. Retrieve the spacing washers which will fall.

2. Snap off at light end :-( requiring repair later.

3. Unscrew the whole threaded assembly (stud) out of the lamp. This is not as bad as 2. As the light will be free and undamaged but the threaded assembly will be trapped between the mounting face of the fibre glass and you will have to try and seperate it later.

You can have any combination of the above for each lamp. Good luck!

All of the above, i think it’s luck really, if the nuts are rusted to the thread then the light cluster will shear off at the screw bed.

It can be repaired by building them back up or if it goes well you could carefully drill down to elongate what you have of the screw bed.

Good luck
