Hi John,
On the A610 whilst the system is very different, there is a mesh bag filter on the fuel pick up in the tank.
On the gta I was expecting something similar to strain the fuel before the main filter ( which is before the pump, as you say). I’d mis read the diagram and assumed item 1 was that strainer.
I have got confused by item 1 which seems to be missing on my car, and also by the routing of the pipes, I’ll go and have another look as on mine I think it’s possible that the flow and return connections are reversed to the tank...but item 1 seems to be missing...whatever it is,
What’s certain is both connections are full of grit.
Let me have another look.
Cheers
Lee

By no others I meant no other hidden filtering IE in the pipework itself.

Ahhh ....correction...I've just looked at tanks in the shed and there are no filters. There is a longer pipe insert in the return, nothing in the outlets. So on Atmo it's out tank to small filter alone.
On the Turbo there is a gauze insert in the outlet to the high pressure side.

Lee ....... these insert gauze filters that are shown in the parts list as being in the return flow to the tank in both the Atmo and Turbo, I have had a rethink about these as to why they might be fitted.
I think they have been purposely fitted in the return to stop any sediment or debris from being passed into the return pipe when refuelling. The force of the fuel being pumped in by the pump nozzle, especially if the tank level is low, is quite high, and will disturb all the debris in the bottom of the tank, and as the metal return pipe line is lower than the base of the tank, then any debris pushed into the return pipe is likely to settle at the lowest point which could potentially cause a blockage.
These gauze filters are not needed in the pump line as the pre pump filter is there to catch any debris caused by the fuel disturbance when refuelling.
So ...... forget about my previous "non return valve" theory. ;)
Just a thought.

Another days effort, lots of filth cleaned from the fuel system but not yet running.
My car hasn’t got that pipe in the return pipe of the tank, but there is something like that in the vent pipe on the top of the tank...I wonder if it’s been put in the wrong place? It’s just a long piece of plastic pipe.
The VW in tank filters are both too fat and too short to fit.
The tank was disgusting, the underside of the fuel filler rusty and the bottom had literally handfuls of grit in it. Pressure washing it, with the sender out as well, worked. The hot weather meant it dried quickly.
The flow pipe was clear, so the fuel filter must have done a good job, but the return pipe produced another large handful of mud and crud, once I’d got it clear with plug gas, electrical cleaner and eventually brake cleaner down it. I then flushed it through with meths then petrol.
Thank goodness for the compressor to get the crud out.
Now oddly I have a fuel leak around the metering unit and no starting. I’m wondering if I’ve swapped flow and return on the bulkhead connections.
Hopefully a happy Alpine tomorrow, but I know not to count my chickens with this car.

The one job I haven’t dun is the fuel meeting unit, it is the only thing that does not work on the car.
Didn’t no you could clean them, if you are going to do this Lee put up a load of pictures and what to look out for. On the plus side you no the fuel System on your car pretty well now :crazy

I’d cleaned the fuel metering unit before reassembling the car....looks like a rerun today...
It was working on the macon trip....
What puzzling me is why I have a new leak...I disconnected the carbs and metering unit before putting compressed air near the pipes.
Alpine gods...or in this cars case the fuel system seems possessed.
As you say, I know the fuel system well.....

LOL thinking about it even if it did work the speedometer is so inaccurate the Mpg would be meaning less, it’s accurate up to 30 but after that buy the time it’s reading 70mph the GPS reads 80mph, how to get dun for speeding in an Alpine.
French cars most cars it’s the uther way around.

Very good Dave, made me smile...which I need because....
Ok folks...any suggestions...
Fuel leaks cured.
I have fuel ( in the carbs, pressure to the carbs (that’s new and welcome) it’s also visible down the manifold and you can smell it from the exhaust after trying to start the car).
I have compression,
I have spark (during cranking at least).
I haven’t touched the ignition timing.
But it won’t fire at all. Not a cough.
Anti dieseling valve in the carb is working.

What have I missed.....?

Apart from the sunshine....
:Mass

Turned out to be a jubilee clip fouling the choke mechanism and preventing the throttle butterfly opening......doh...
Starting now.

I agree...efi is so much easier.....but it wouldn’t have liked the grit in the fuel pipes either...see pictures this came out of the pipe back from the flow regulator. This seems to have been impacting the fuel pressure regulator and reducing the pressure to the carbs.
The joy of Alpine’s....why have a car you can drive, when you can spend the day upside down in the garage?

Custard...won't your new wheels have increased the rolling radius..if so the speedo will under read (and the acceleration will be slower too)
