Rusty New A110

Slightly misleading title but a poster on the FAR website has (quite a serious) a rust problem with his A110. The problem is that the screws which fasten down the rear window screw into a fixing in the rear window. This fixing has a (very small) rubber seal which seals to the clear plastic washers shown in the pictures. If the washer is damaged or the screw not properly tightened the water can rust the fixing causing it to seize and/or let water into the boot. See pics. Worth a check - my washers aren't particularly well aligned with the holes.

mine are very poorly aligned as well- they are not really washers- I thought they were there to protect the paintwork.

A small smear of copperslip or something similar on the threads should help avert this issue.

Looks like an AC 3000ME in the background, allways liked those, for their quirkiness.

I think that the poorly aligned plastic "washer" in the pic is merely to prevent noise and paint damage.

I believe Renault are advising that the 3 thumbscrews which secure the rear window are replaced after each 50 uses in order that the anti-oxidation coating on the threads is maintained.

Not sure what they are proposing vis-a-vis the threads in the captive nuts :-)

Checked my 3 bolts today and they were okay. They just looked a little 'dry' if that makes sense. I gave them a slight film of 3-in-1 and will keep an eye on them. Contemplated a spray of lithium grease but decided that might gunge up.

That made me start thinking about the weight saving advantage of stupid un-user-friendly engine-cover access like this.

Alpine and the motoring press are doing all this crowing about the car being 1000-1100kg.

Back in the 1980s my Renault 5 Turbo2 had a hatchback and bomb-proof hinged engine-cover (supplied with a weighty allen tool clipped under the parcel shelf corner) that made you actually not mind checking the levels etc. ....... and the car was only just over 900kg ffs. What has gone wrong with the world?

The thought police decided we needed side impact protection, electric windows, airbags, a couple of kilos of ABS pump etc, etc.
It does amaze me that in these supposedly environmentally friendly days, that cars continue to get heavier, despite use of more advanced materials and production processes. And what's with the current trend to have automatically opening and closing tailgates? Just what we need, a few more electric motors as ballast, My Hillman Imp weighed 725kg and carried 4 people, so 1100kg for a 2 seater is hardly ground breaking if it weren't for all the stuff we don't need.

The new A110 weighs close to a GTA Atmo but has loads more equipment, more power and consequently should be much quicker, so we ought to congratulate Renault for reversing the weight tide, albeit in a small way....
Or for another comparison it’s similarly equipped to a610, with the same power but 300kg+ lighter, and therefore should be a lot quicker (mind you both the GTA and the A610 can seat 4 (not too tall) people with no or a little luggage).
I was talking to a Porsche owner on Friday who was saying..”I know it’s not a Porsche but that low weight is a desirable idea”...definite buying signs from him...

Plenty of boot space in a GTA, I have seen a GTA go to le Mans, 4 up, packed with suits, frocks and hair extensions for posh 60th birthday dinner with Ragnotti too. He was a bit of a wild card after all those drinks.

Rear space isn't bad in a GTA....I remember getting 2 way over 6' 15st lads in the back seats to get lost in Milan......+ 1 shortarsed President up front :D

Simon, Clee,
I know there is space for adults in the back of. GTA/610...but that space is also most of the luggage space in a GTA and all of it in the 610....
Great for wine importing....
It did make me smile when the custome people asked to see the engine at Calais to make sure I’d got no immigrants in there,
